What is a Raster Image?
A raster image is a computer-usable digital picture. It might be a picture of Aunt Matilda or of a document, such as a well log or scout ticket. The picture is broken into a grid of equally sized pieces, called pixels, which can then be saved to a permanent, easily stored media. The pictures on this web site are raster images.
The primary benefit of having images in raster format is that you can use the images in computer illustration and analysis programs, but there are other benefits. If the original document or one of the raster copies is destroyed, a backup from the archive media is easily obtained. Raster images can be used to print new paper copies.
